Not Your Average Protein Powder

That’s right, we’re going VEGAN — with protein that is!

It looks like plant-based is the new pink of protein, and for good reason. It is no secret that protein is a MUST in our everyday diets, and if you grew up in the 90s, animal protein was the MVP. But as we are now in the era of better wellness and nutrition, it might be time for our usual animal-based proteins to take the bench.

Welcome to the arena, plant-based protein powders, and just in time for summer (hello hot girl summer). We tapped Michael Yewdell, founder of BEAM, to share why protein powder should be written on your next grocery list.

“Protein in general is such a vital nutrient that has loads of benefits. The more you are able to bring into your diet, the more your body will thrive. Sometimes it is hard to get all the protein you need and that is why the convenient protein shake can help. They will help you stay full longer, get the proper nutrients, and allow your body to recover optimally. When I was diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin's Lymphoma back in 2017, my doctors wanted to prepare me for my battle and told me to look into a few supplements to help alleviate post-treatment symptoms. One of them was a vegan protein. When people speak about diet changes, they are doing it for the betterment of their bodies. They want to optimize how they feel, how they look, and how they perform.”

Going plant-based with protein powders offers more than just the recovery and building of muscles, although this reason is still at the top of our list, but it can also improve our health in other ways.

HIGHER IN FIBER AND ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS

For those who might be new to the benefits of good gut health, our microbiome (the “good bacteria” of the gut) thrives on fiber, which makes it easier to digest. You will also see an increase in other vital nutrients like calcium, iron, and magnesium which are essential for your body’s daily functions.

NO HORMONES OR ANTIBIOTICS

Plant protein is all natural and animal free. With animal-sourced protein, you run the risk of residual hormones or antibiotics finding their way into the products you consume. Not to mention by going animal-free you can support the animals and the environment as we know that animal cruelty is unfortunately still something that needs to be corrected. Need we say more?
