Hair Care Tips from Julia Muniz

Summer may be behind us, but bouncy, healthy curls are never out of season. In fact, Autumn is an optimal time to embrace change and learn to love your natural mane. This season, take the spirit of transition to heart – or head – and experience the healthy benefits just in time for Spring. Model and founder of Maoi Swimwear, Julia Muniz, shares her tips for transitioning to her natural roots, plus her most loved products to achieving great (and natural) lengths.

“Since I was young, I chemically straightened my hair using keratin treatments. And as I grew older I realized that I was erasing a big part of my identity by not accepting my natural hair. During the pandemic I was forced to stop straightening my hair as salons were closed, so I decided to accept my curls. It took time to cut all the hair that was damaged by the chemical straightening and fully grow out my hair. The moment I cut the last bit, I felt like I could truly be me and proudly wear my heritage. Since then, I have received so many messages saying that I inspired them through my hair journey and I want to spread that message further.”

You — and your beautician — know best.

“I’ve heard mixed opinions from professionals about washing your hair everyday. One of my most trusted hair care professionals said that if I’m exercising daily and sweating, I need to at least rinse with water that day. She told me to wash my hair every day with shampoo, but I noticed that my curls were getting too dry – so we switched for 4 times a week. I feel like my hair responds really well to this routine and my scalp always feels super fresh. I also love to go to the salon and get a professional scalp detox/treatment once a month – that helps a lot with hair growth.”

The NO heat quick fix.

“When I want a change, I don’t want to use heat that will damage my curls. Instead, I like to slick my hair back, using the Davine hair butter, to create a high ponytail or the perfect bun. My go-to product for any slicked back look is a thin, bristle hair brush. This look is really practical for traveling too. I love to do this for long flights, because my curly hair can get really frizzy on flights, and I want to arrive at my destination looking put together.”

Julia Muniz’s Hair Care steps.

“Every day I wash my hair with water and use a conditioner on just the lengths of my hair. I use shampoo 4 times a week and apply a hair mask for about 20-30 minutes.
